they're fully expecting a 90-minute attack aimed at tearing romney down. mr. obama's traveling press secretary is joking about the whole attempt to lower expectations saying well, he could just fall right off the stage. the president is up in basically all of the most recent polls. gallup has him at 50 to 44%. reuters has him up by 7 and even fox news has him up by 5. even some top romney officials are admitting he's a lousy candidate! according to politico this morning, republicans even some of those working for romney say the real problem is not the polls or the gaffes or the leaked 47% remark, it's just mitt romney. they say he's a great businessman but when it comes to leading a political campaign, he is just, plain unnatural. and planned parenthood is stepping up its attacks against the romney campaign. this week, voters in virginia are getting fliers in the mail warning romney would turn back the clock for women. it also highlights his plan to eliminate federal funding for planned parenthood. we're back with more. stay with us. romney 44. chuck, why don't you break those down for us? >> look at north carolina and nevada, the two places that economically are doing worse probably than any of the other battleground states. so if romney's economic message is going to play anywhere it's there. he should feel given how bad his last ten days were that the fact that he is only basically in the margin of error in those two states is good news for him if you will if you can look at it that way. notice that the president's job rating in both of those states, lower than his number. he sits at 47 in north carolina, 48 in nevada. then new hampshire is acting like the rest of the battlegrounds we've seen and that's got to be a little disappointing to romney since he spent so much time in new hampshire but frankly that one didn't surprise me. the surprising one to me was nevada that it was close. i expected there to be a little more of a gap there. >> suffolk university poll out late last night shows that the candidates are pretty close in virginia. neck and neck. obama 46. romney 44. chuck? >> the one thing i've heard o

before the first show down between president obama and mitt romney at a debate at university of denver. we have a couple of polls from swing states to show you. the poll roundup for the morning. in virginia, president obama leads by two. in iowa, romney by one in a republican poll done for iowa republican website there, moving down the ballot, add some other numbers in the nbc wall street polls, dean heller leading berkley by five points in the new hampshire governor race. in north carolina, the republican pulling away over the democrat. and we have melissa harris-perry, and republican strategist and former adviser to chris christie, mike duhane. maggie, start with you. we have all of the debate memos. right now, the only time you can see one side compliment the other is on debate skills. apparently one is lincoln, one is douglas, the other is not. >> one is cicero. my colleague alex burns wrote if either of the guys manages to tie their shoes and make it to the podiums, it will be impressive to the advisers. what we hear out of the camp, my guy is terrible, your guy is the best

the romney people understand they're down six, seven, eight points. and they're down right now in north carolina, a state they were ahead in and not so long ago. it makes you think that newt gingrich is right, mitt romney needs to turn in a great performance in the first debate, or else the window starts closing. >> this is very clear. you get several big opportunities as a candidate to make your mark. the announcement of your running mate. your convention. and then the debates. and the reality is that mitt romney is not seized on those first two events. even a big foreign trip as he made to london and israel, he is not catapulted as a candidate into a streak of some momentum where he really challenges the incumbent president. when it's always tough to beat an incumbent. and so, you know, i've talked to republicans, allies of mitt romney who say this has been the low point. the polls reflect that. so is he still in it? yes. but he's got to season the debates and then he has to have some kind of final act, which is about two things. it's not only about going big as you've been talk

he got clobbered by him, that mitt romney, when he had to down in florida, literally turned things around, everybody saw that and knows that. mitt romney debated -- tim pawlenty said he's as good as a debater as there is, i'm telling you that because i debated him all the time. these are guys that ran against him. the fact is that mitt romney is very good debater. he's done a very good job. he's practiced and practiced and practiced and he's been flying around with, you know, the person playing obama on his airplane every minute. he's gone away and done five debates in 48 hours up in new hampshire or vermont or somewhere. this is the biggest deal in the world to him. he's been really getting ready for it and as we know from my experience with president bush, that debate can mean a lot. i went up eight to ten points after that debate, so mitt romney has a lot more going for him here. the president on the other hand, has to be president every day. just gave two speeches i thought terrific speeches in new york. he has been at the white house in dealing with a whole series of issues, m

going to start to climb up? >> well, i mean, mitt romney has shown a lot of resolve through the primaries, and he bounced back from a lot of bad periods. i remember well in september of 2000 we called it black september and we were down 3 to 5 points. it wasn't until the dethe baits we turned things around. there's opportunity here for sure, but what the romney campaign has to do, which is sort of what charles krauthhammer is saying is start to talk about policy and go big. >> how does do that? >> he takes an opportunity at the dethe bait to have defining moments. he can talk specifically about the tax plan he put out there, put specifics on the table. talk about where the deductions are going come from, talk about the entitlement reforms. talk about how, in fact, it's mitt romney mean-testing entitlement reforms. he's talking about returning benefits to seniors and others that don't make as much money, which is benefit redistribution. >> well, i want to -- a lot of times when you look at where a campaign is, you can tell by how the money is moving. it was somethinging that the

turnout. this is going to come down to what is the ground game for mitt romney. what is the ground game for president barack obama and will their voters come out? having somebody on a phone call, cell phone or land line, how they are employing to vote is irreleva irrelevant. the question is are they going to bring, are they going to come out, bring their family members out. are they going to bring their neighbors out? to the republicans stop all of this incessant whining about the polls. what you should focus on mike on targeting your voters in critical areas in quitting them to the polls. the real analysis is going to be the first two weeks of early voting. they will get a sense of what the turnout is. go back to 2008. president obama's folks in 2008 actually looked in north carolina as a state they were losing. when they saw early turnout in 2008, they sent troops and money back into north carolina. that's how they won by 14,000 votes. how a poll says it's one thing, but it's what happens when they actually vote. that's what matters at the end of the day. >> but that early voting
